A quiet house at the head of the valley
Fourteen rooms in a restored farmhouse, nine hectares of terraces, and a road that ends at our gate. Solace is built for people who want to do considerably less.

01The valley
Twenty-two kilometres from the nearest town, and further than that from the noise
The Serena valley faces south-west and empties into pine above and olive below. Solace sits near the top of it, at 340 metres, in an 1830s farmhouse that spent forty years empty before we found it.
What we have built is deliberately small: fourteen rooms, one kitchen, a pool cut into the old threshing floor and a great many places to sit down. The rest is the valley, which does most of the work.

03Experiences
Up at five, back before the table is cleared
The old shepherds’ path climbs from behind the barn to the west ridge in about forty minutes. Leave in the dark and you reach the top a few minutes before the sun clears the far range, with the valley still under mist.
It is one of five things we arrange — alongside a table in the orchard, an afternoon at a potter’s wheel, two silent hours in the pines, and a field, at night, with no light for thirty kilometres.
04Dining
A short menu, written at four in the afternoon
Cardo occupies the old olive store — one long room, twelve tables, a fire at the far end. Five or six dishes a night, built from four terraces of garden and whatever came up the road from the coast that morning.

05Slow days
The pool is cut into the old threshing floor
There is no spa here in the usual sense — no menu of treatments, no relaxation area with piped water sounds. There is a long unheated pool on the threshing terrace, a wood-fired sauna at the edge of the pines, and a treatment room where two therapists from the village work by appointment.

Built into the slope at the edge of the pines, lit at four each afternoon through the colder months.

Massage by appointment with therapists from the village. One kind of treatment, done properly, an hour long.

06How we keep house
Available in a minute, invisible the rest of the time
We think good hospitality is mostly restraint. Nobody will walk you through the property at length, turn down your bed while you are in the room, or ask how everything is for the fourth time in an evening.
What we do instead is answer quickly, tell you the truth about the weather and the ridge, and leave the mornings entirely alone. Most guests find their own rhythm by the second day, and after that we largely get out of the way.
